Users Discontinuing Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users buying such treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain suggests a return to original weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Experts believe the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened rebound.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the long-term character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Users who have come off the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural management.
